<b>Night Market V </b><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
PDP Intern Marissa</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As a new intern at the PDP, I had my first Project Pop-Up:
Night Market experience this past Friday, July 12, 2013. I brought along my
friend, Monica, visiting from Florida, who thankfully, was a pretty good sport
about coming to work with me on a Friday night. The Night Market took place in
an empty parking lot on the corner of Eight Street and Penn Avenue and ran from
5:30 to 11:00 p.m. As to be expected of Pittsburgh weather, it was drizzling
when I arrived around 4:00 p.m., but the rain did not seem to affect the select
local food, craft, and handmade goods vendors that were happily setting up
their booths. A few other PDP staff members and I set up our information booth
equipped with handouts such as our Downtown Made Easy Guide, a guide to the
Cultural Trust Gallery Crawl, and our Proud to go Downtown t-shirts on sale for
$15.00 (and are still available at our weekly Farmers Market!).<br />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DXYiXn1LP1c/UelYhmx51-I/AAAAAAAAAYs/gbmiLm_ZYWc/s1600/dancers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DXYiXn1LP1c/UelYhmx51-I/AAAAAAAAAYs/gbmiLm_ZYWc/s320/dancers.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
By the time 5:30 rolled around, the music was pumping, the
smell of the food from the vendors of various Pittsburgh restaurants was making
my mouth water, and the rain was tapering off. The people started filing in, dozens
of them, enjoying the laid-back and fun atmosphere that the Night Market
possessed. My co-workers Jack and Mairin joined Monica and I for a game of corn
hole coordinated by our friends from PUMP that lasted almost 45 minutes. I am
proud to say that Jack and I won the match, 21 to 18; a close and very intense
game. At this point I was having so much fun that I completely forgot that I
was actually at work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3NoV_2q7RtQ/UelYrMEvsWI/AAAAAAAAAY0/kOFntvzjWks/s1600/IMG_6591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3NoV_2q7RtQ/UelYrMEvsWI/AAAAAAAAAY0/kOFntvzjWks/s320/IMG_6591.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
After our round of corn hole, I could not handle the amazing
smells coming from the food vendors anymore, and decided to browse each to find
which I wanted to dig into first. There were so many tasty options: gazpacho from
Soup Nancy’s, handcrafted burgers from BRGR, several pastas from Del’s
Restaurant, grape leaves and gyros from Café Byblos, and so much more.
Considering the fact that a 21-year old girl can only each so much, you can see
my dilemma. I decided on a smoked brisket sandwich from Meat & Potatoes
topped with Korean BBQ sauce, beer sauerkraut, and pickled cabbage. Needless to
say, I was afraid for the cleanliness of my white shirt, but dug right in. The
warm, tender beef paired with the perfect toppings was literally the best
brisket I have ever had. No exaggeration necessary. It didn’t take me long to
devour the entire sandwich, which left me very full and very satisfied.<br />

<br />
For the rest of my shift, which went very quickly, I worked
the PDP booth selling t-shirts and spreading information about the Gallery
Crawl. It was great to hear that so many people were enjoying the market as
much as I was, and were so eager to learn more about the PDP! As 8:00
approached, my shift was over, and Monica and I made a lap around the market
vendors. The handmade items for sale were incredible, such as the Pittsburgh
architecture-inspired steel jewelry from Audra Azoury Jewerly, and <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the robot sculptures created from recycled
objects by Jones Robo-Works, as well as all of the other artists’ works, which
were truly one-of-a-kind. I bought a shirt from DeadBuryDead, which makes both
signature and classic designed t-shirts. I decided to end the night with a
scrumptious oatmeal raisin cookie from Fabulous Homemade Cookies, and mango
sorbet from Lascola’s Italian Ice. I would give my first experience at the
Night Market two thumbs up, and I cannot wait until the next one, happening
September 27, 2013!<br />

Pittsburgh’s Downtown Partnership
Night Market gives artists in this city a great opportunity to get their name
out there and meet new people. My name is Jennifer and I own <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/thehempbutterfly" target="_blank">The Hemp Butterfly</a>,
I specialize in fashionable, eco-conscious, organic, vintage, often one of a
kind jewelry & accessories. All are handmade & hand knotted in Hemp by
my own little fingers. Expect boho-chic mixed with creepy cool. I will be a new vendor at the next Night Market
being held on July 12. As a newcomer both to the Night Market as
well as to the city of Pittsburgh I am most looking forward to the people. The
smiling faces as they walk by, getting to meet other fellow artists, the great
music and just the vibe in general. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Events like these are important
to the development and enrichment of any town or city. It gives artists like me
the opportunity to showcase our work and reach out to the public. There is
nothing like the feeling of seeing their faces as they discover new artists,
new crafts, and exciting music in a downtown environment like no other. The
fact that they are held in vacant buildings and parking lots is just and added
bonus. As an art collector I’m looking forward to what treasures I will find.
What new artist will catch my eye. What new friends I will make and what new
music I will discover. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Thank you PDP it is a privilege
to be part of this vibrant event. I hope I get to participate and visit both as
as a vendor and as a spectator in many more to come. In a city where art is art
is becoming alive I could not be any happier. <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Out & About: The Mattress Factory</b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By PDP Intern Marissa</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For this week’s Out and About, I visited the Mattress
Factory at 500 Sampsonia Way located on the North Shore. At first thought, and
having never been to the Mattress Factory, I pictured the museum covered in
wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling plush, cushiony mattresses that you were free
to jump and play on. Who can blame me with a name like that? But in my
delightful discovery, the Mattress Factory is so much more mentally and
physically stimulating than a bunch of fluffy beds. The museum is made up of
five floors, each holding several different room-sized works of contemporary
art that totally envelop you. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Several exhibits throughout the Mattress Factory are a part
of the <i>Feminist and…</i> exhibition,
which presents new work by six women artists from around the world whose
practices of feminism show that the issue is of many cultures, generations, and
can be expressed in many ways. Upon walking out of the elevator on the fourth
level, the first thing to catch my eye was an off-white room that had Arabic calligraphy
writings covering the walls and floor. This is the work of Parastou Forouhar,
an artist from Tehran, who expresses her critical attitude toward Iranian
politics and Islamic Fundamentalism in this feminist piece entitled <i>Written Room</i>. After exploring this
space, I found myself desperately wanting to know what the writings stated. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another element of <i>Feminist
and…</i> was the piece <i>Active Energy:
Pittsburgh</i>, by local Ph.D visual artist Loraine Leeson. This project
focused on regeneration of the urban environment, and how it affects both the
general quality of life and personal identity. The six-point suspended projection
composition is a collection of video interviews of residents of Pittsburgh who
are affected by this issue, young and old, male and female. This work was my
favorite of the entire gallery because it connects to the people of the
Pittsburgh community, and gave them the opportunity for their voices to be
heard. I loved hearing their stories and experiences relating to urban
development. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the long-term exhibits at the Mattress Factory that I
found remarkable yet simple, was a room filled with black light, mirrored
ceilings and walls, and a white floor covered in brightly colored dots. This
creation, which is rightfully named <i>Infinity
Dots Mirrored Room</i>, is by Japanese born artist, Yayoi Kusama. When I closed
the door to the exhibit, I was able to realize how brilliant yet terrifying
this piece actually was. The infinite copies of myself and the room that the mirrors
reflected left me with a feeling of emptiness. I could not figure out why this
room made me feel so uneasy, until I later read this quote by Kusama: “A mirror
is a device which obliterates everything including myself and others in the
light of another world or a gallant apparatus which creates nothingness.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the basement of the museum I discovered two orange-red
flower pots hanging a foot off the ground, suspended by wire from the ceiling.
I stared at this display for about a minute, and was getting a little impatient
waiting for it to do something, when a noise suddenly came from the two pots,
making them vibrate slightly, and caused the cracked paint inside the pots to
shake. After learning more about the two objects, I learned that the piece <i>Ash,</i> is by Rolf Julius, and that there
are actually speakers inside the pots that are recordings of everyday sounds
such as birds, radiators, and crickets, fixed together to make the collage of
noise I heard.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After an hour and fifteen minutes of getting lost in the art
of the museum, I returned to the main floor of the Mattress Factory where, I of
course being the shopaholic that I am, was drawn to the gift shop. There were
so many neat knickknacks, books, clothing, and other unique gifts inside, I
would have bought one of each if I didn’t have a college student-sized
wallet. Overall, my trip to the Mattress
Factory was inspiring and enlightening. I will definitely return to see new
exhibits in the future, and I recommend it to any Pittsburgher or out-of-towner
looking to satisfy their need for an extraordinary artistic experience. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What do you like most about working at the PDP?</b> </span><br />

<br />
Ellen is a rising junior at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Media & Communications. Born and raised in Sewickley, PA, Ellen now lives in the East End.<br />
<br />
One of the events she is most looking forward to this summer is the Three Rivers Arts Festival in June. "Pittsburgh has an awesome art scene, and I love that during this festival it is all in one place to be seen and sold," she adds, "This year the Fountain will be running again, finally!" Two summers ago, Ellen spent an entire day at Heinz Field as an extra in the filming of Christopher Nolan's <i>The Dark Knight Rises</i>. After roasting in the July sun for 15 hours dressed in winter clothing, she, along with thousands of other Pittsburghers can now say they were in the blockbuster film...which still serves as a great conversation starter. And yes, she did see the movie at midnight when it opened.<br />
<br />
A big sports fan, Ellen goes to as many Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers game she can. Her family has sat in the same seats in section 108 of Heinz Field since it opened in 2001. In addition to her favorite "Pittsburgher" sandwich from Primanti's, she loves to go to Nola in Market Square for her soul food cravings and Penn Avenue Fish Company on Forbes for their amazing "Jumbo Johnny" roll."Downtown has a great mix of restaurants. Just from PDP I am able to walk to get Indian, Italian, Greek, Mexican, or Chinese food for lunch," Ellen adds. In order to be able to enjoy all of these foods, and be guilt-free, she goes to any of the power yoga locations in Pittsburgh.<br />
<br />
Ellen started her marketing internship with PDP in the beginning of May and has been involved with the social media accounts and the weekly e-newsletter.Pittsburgh Downtown Partnershiphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349782301632244732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-684171929663701487.post-51615576606803029562013-05-21T10:24:00.003-07:002013-05-21T10:24:47.739-07:00Get to Know New PDP Intern Marissa Ghantous<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Hello! My name is Marissa Ghantous and I am happy to be a new Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership Marketing Intern! I was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania; a small town about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. I am currently a senior at the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland, just a short bus ride away from the PDP office. I am majoring in Media and Professional Communications with a minor in Corporate and Community Relations. I learned about PDP through Pitt’s career services when I was looking for possible internships for the summer. I was so drawn to PDP because of all the work it does to help the Downtown Pittsburgh community grow and thrive, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of that effort too. Not to mention all of the amazing opportunities that come with working at PDP, like getting exposure to many downtown businesses and participating in events like Light Up Night and the Peoples Gas Holiday Market. </div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Coming from such a small town, I appreciate all the opportunities, entertainment and other happenings Pittsburgh has to offer, especially the unique shopping and great places to eat. Growing up, I was lucky to have parents who brought me to Downtown Pittsburgh many times a year, and for me, summer means Pirates games; ball park hot dogs, and the excitement of raising the Jolly Roger on winning nights. Ice skating at PPG Place is one of my favorite activities to do in the winter with the giant, beautiful Christmas tree in the center illuminating the rosy cheeks of the skaters circling the rink. But perhaps what I love most about Pittsburgh is that even though it is a well-developed and busy urban atmosphere, it is warm, welcoming, clean, and friendly—it feels like home. </div>

someone with a bit of a competitive streak, I’ve found that the Bike Challenge
is a fun way to push myself to ride more miles and see how far I can climb up
the local and national leaderboards. If you have a short commute to work or
school, don’t worry -- the competition points heavily favor daily riders by
awarding 20 points per day of cycling (at least 1 mile), plus 1 point per mile
logged. It’s a good incentive to get yourself out the door on two wheels as
often as possible, even if the forecast calls for “liquid sunshine.” The
National Bike Challenge starts on May 1 and runs through September 30, and
riders can join in at any time during the competition. Encourage your friends,
family, neighbors, and colleagues to join, and even form a team together -- the
challenge becomes more fun with familiar names on the leaderboard! If you have
a smartphone, you can even download a free app to automatically track and log
the mileage of your rides on the go. Every ride counts, whether you are
commuting to work, biking to the grocery store, taking a leisurely spin around
our wonderful riverfront trails, or tearing up the mountain bike trails in
Frick Park. </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What is your favorite Downtown restaurant?</strong><br />

Depends on what we are in the mood for.</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With all the new restaurants, we really like to make sure we try them all. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Talk a bit about your favorite Downtown Pittsburgh Experience or Memory.</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I started coming to Downtown Pittsburgh from Rochester on the train with my Mother most Saturdays when I was growing up. We would go to all the department stores; pick a great place for lunch. I started at a young age really loving Pittsburgh. I feel truly blessed to be in a position to be part of the revitalization of the city and the region.</span><br />
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></strong>
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tell us one thing about Downtown that has surprised you.</strong><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The new demand for residential living that has taken off in the last few years. It was always part of the plan to make Pittsburgh a vibrant downtown, but has happened much quicker than I would have imagined. The other thing that surprises others is that you can walk anywhere in downtown Pittsburgh in 10 or 15 minutes.</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I really enjoy walking to work.</span><br />
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></strong>
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What is one great idea you have to make Downtown Pittsburgh better?</strong><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would like to see smaller circulator buses as part of the transit system. We did a study a number of years ago on either electric or natural gas vehicles that provide linkages to bus stations. This would keep the larger buses on the outer rim of the city.</span><br />
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></strong>
<strong style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Describe Downtown in 3 words.</strong><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Beautiful, safe, and now vibrant.</span><br />

Project Pop-Up Night Market III was my second experience with the Pop-Up
Market, and despite the snowstorm it brought out quite the crowd. I’m the
owner of SMD Jewelry, I create hand-forged metal jewelry featuring gems and a
wide range of other materials. I travel around to events all year long, and I’m
always pleasantly surprised at how many people I meet, and how many new
products find. Each market I vend with provides a different experience, and I
think PDP has one of the most well rounded markets in Pittsburgh. At this last
event with PDP I’m pretty sure I had the best cookie of my life from Bluebird
Kitchen, creamy chai tea flavored filling between two chewy ginger cookies.
Unforgettable. Everyone raved about the music that night--cover songs done by a
string quartet—it was the perfect fit for a cold snowy evening in downtown
Pittsburgh. On both occasions vending with Project Pop-Up I was fortunate to
meet so many inspiring people, vendors and patrons alike.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I’m
convinced markets that utilize otherwise vacant lots and buildings aren’t just
putting on a fun event, with every market they are revitalizing those areas by
helping to build a healthier local economy through encouraging consumers to
purchase local and handcrafted. At the same time these events are bringing
people from all walks of life together to enjoy live music, food, performances
and an array of local artisanal goods. I’m proud to be part of Downtown
Pittsburgh’s Project Pop-Up movement because I know how much events like these
enrich the community. Needless to say I’m looking forward to vending at the
next Project Pop-Up Night Market, and hope to see you there!"</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For us at the Pittsburgh Pie Guy, the PDP Night Markets are
our beginning as a business. It was at the second-ever Night Market that we got
our start—our first chance to sell our pies to the public to see what they
thought. It was a test run, so to speak, to see whether we had a viable product
that people would be interested in buying. And boy, were they! The Night Market
proved to be the best possible environment for first day, as it drew many
hungry and curious passersby our way. That night was a huge success for us. Not
only did we sell <i>all </i>of the pies we
brought, but we had a constant queue going of eager customers who wanted to
know why and how a new pie-baking business hit the scene in Pittsburgh. And all
of that happened in an exciting atmosphere, with live music and energetic
people wanting to do something more for their community.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That was all possible thanks to the Pittsburgh Downtown
Partnership, who gladly accepted us regardless of our lack of previous market
experience. Now that we have participated in another Night Market since our
first experience, we are more than ever looking forward to the next one in April!
For us, these markets are a source of guaranteed customers, since they draw
loads of people curious to see what all the hubbub is about, eager to see
what’s for sale from the variety of vendors. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

like us, new businesses, but also small, local artisans and craftsman looking
for an outlet for their wares and art. People looking to become vendors who may
not have the opportunity in bigger markets where there are long waiting lists
should apply to become a vendor at the Night Market. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

local businesses and artists, look no further than the Night Markets! All of
the vendors are from Pittsburgh and are actively working towards making their
community a better, more vibrant place, and need the support of customers to
help them towards this goal! This makes the Night Markets an exciting, diverse
place with many different things for sale, all made here in the ‘Burgh. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

So how do we take a lesson from </span><a href="https://twitter.com/keenzai"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Matthew Keener</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> and “design” Downtown to change the brains of others? Maybe, to paraphrase </span><a href="http://www.15104.cc/"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Braddock</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Mayor John Fetterman, </span><span style="background: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">we reinvent what others perceive to be impossible,

throughout the city. </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Don Charlton, founder and CEO of The Resumator – a Pittsburgh start-up – and his mantra of taking an idea from words to actions to accomplishments at a quick pace was energizing and noteworthy in that entrepreneurship is not just about starting a new business.</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I doubt I’m the first, but let me say that we would love to see Don’s business and his team call Downtown Pittsburgh home.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<i><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I don't have the space to talk about every speaker, but be sure to visit the </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.tedxgrandviewave.com/">TEDxGrandviewAve</a> website to view videos of the fantastic talks!</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As unintentional as it may have been, Downtown was the perfect setting for this conference. Just look at the progress made over the </span><a href="http://www.downtownpittsburgh.com/_files/docs/pdp-285-investment_map_11x17_q4.pdf"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">past six years</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. New skyscrapers, a plethora of new apartments and condos, a reinvented Market Square, new ideas and activities to establish Downtown as the top of mind place for living, business and pleasure in the region. Pittsburgh is lucky to have people who are committed enough to the city and enterprise to spend a Saturday listening to the bright ideas and actions of others. These are probably the same people that will continue to grow Downtown and our region over the next six years.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was quite invigorating to walk around SPACE (featuring a new thought-provoking exhibit called “Mean Girls”) and see people from every age, race, social, economic and artistic realm all taking in the food, beverage, music, dance, and art choices the evening had to offer. That’s exactly how I see Downtown – a diverse group of people experiencing a diverse offering. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After a lovely dinner at Six Penn Kitchen, the time was approaching for an anticipated Broadway Musical starting just across the street at Heinz Hall. Green Day fans rejoice- <i>American Idiot</i>, the musical based on the album of the same high-energy, angst filled story that incorporates Green Day music, dancing, and a very cool set that features dark backgrounds and metal, multiple television screens, moveable scaffolds and staircases, and even a few high-wire flying scenes.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The story revolves around friends Will, Johnny, Tunny, and their slacker 20-something lifestyles. The trio decides to escape their boring suburban lives by buying bus tickets to head to the big city, but the realities of life sidetrack them in very serious and powerful ways; Will never makes the bus because he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant, and instead stays home and spirals into drug and alcohol use, Tunny quickly becomes disenchanted with the big city and opts to join the Army, and Johnny, who is also the narrator and main charactr, can't handle the temptations of the city and spirals quickly into multiple temptations. The three eventually find their way back home, but each are changed profoundly. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you love Green Day's music, you'll appreciate the soulful, energetic renditions by both the actors and the on-stage band - even an actor portraying Billy Joe Armstrong is on stage at all times to oversee the music and story. It's a great story with excellent acting and singing, and make sure you stick around to the en, for the final song performed by the entire cast.</span>Pittsburgh Downtown Partnershiphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349782301632244732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-684171929663701487.post-7229893667782170852013-02-15T12:01:00.001-08:002013-02-15T12:01:25.889-08:00A Stroll Downtown...<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By, Nick Kratsas</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Since I work in Green Tree, one of the things I lose out on is the phenomenon of the urban happy hour. What better way to fill time between work and home then having a few drinks with friends? So, I took the trolley Downtown to meet some friends, followed by date night with my wife.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My first official happy hour was meeting my wife and friends at <a href="http://www.tonicpittsburgh.com/" target="_blank">Tonic Bar</a>, on the corner of Liberty and 10th. Downstairs, the bar has a modern style, with stark gray and black décor.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At 6:00 p.m. the place is packed and animated. Upstairs, it’s a bit calmer, with lots of tables, and a style with more wood accents and vibrant art on the walls.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I like the speed of upstairs, the service was very attentive. We had some great drinks that weren’t hard on the wallet, and my friends ordered some fun appetizers. The roasted garlic and red pepper hummus had a tangy flavor that showcased the roasted red pepper, and the nachos were overloaded with cheese, salsa, fresh guacamole, and more. </span><br />

<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After libations and munchies, my wife and I left our friends to start our date. We walked across the street to the <a href="http://theoriginalfishmarket.com/" target="_blank">Original Fish Market</a>, located in the Westin Hotel by the Convention Center. We sat in the dining area, which despite the large space, our booth felt like we were dining alone, with high backed seats and a hanging light over the table. We were seated near the kitchen, which has a big glass wall so you can watch the chefs prepare your meal. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our server was very attentive and gave us great recommendations from their 30-plus wine list, as well as explaining what the different fish would taste like from the menu. We started with the rainbow roll from the sushi menu, which was wrapped in salmon and tuna. We thought the fish was very fresh and the presentation beautiful. Next, I had a cup of the cream of blue crab soup, a thick cream soup with tons of pieces of crab meat. I’ve tried she-crab soup in Charleston, South Carolina, and other fine establishments, and the soup at OFM blew all of them away. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next, came our main course. I opted for the Hawaiian Walu. It was tender, fresh, and clean, and came pan seared with a brandy cream sauce, fingerling potatoes, mushrooms, and asparagus. The sauce was the boss, and went well with everything on the plate. My wife had the scallops, which were large and tenderly cooked. They came with delicious mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts roasted with bacon, and long, thin strips of fried plantains that stuck straight in the air- it was a lovely, artistic presentation. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hy8cjcEamfU/UR6ScI6KluI/AAAAAAAAAJI/cR0-Rgjisyc/s1600/IMG_0509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hy8cjcEamfU/UR6ScI6KluI/AAAAAAAAAJI/cR0-Rgjisyc/s320/IMG_0509.jpg" uea="true" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We finished our meal by sharing the crème brulee. The top was perfectly crystallized and shattered like glass with a tap of a spoon, and it was sweet and creamy. The berries on top made for a fresh contrast to the sweetness of the crème brulee. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In all, we really enjoyed our experience. Our server described everything exactly as it came, the dim-lighted dining room made for great date ambiance, and the price was reasonable and what you should expect from a fine restaurant in the city, especially one where the fish is so fresh. I read somewhere that their head chef is big on bringing in fish fresh from around the world, and they make sustainability a priority, which makes me feel good about going there. What a great experience!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MrMTq99f1wk/UR6ShP1V51I/AAAAAAAAAJY/-Sc_I9UXPeM/s1600/IMG_2086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MrMTq99f1wk/UR6ShP1V51I/AAAAAAAAAJY/-Sc_I9UXPeM/s320/IMG_2086.jpg" uea="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Afterwards, we made a quick jaunt over to the O’Reilly Theater for a presentation of “1776” by the <a href="http://www.ppt.org/" target="_blank">Pittsburgh Public Theater</a>. This show is a quirky presentation of the Founding Fathers debating if and how they will secede from Britain and start the American Revolution. It’s filled with more than a dozen actors in period clothing, and they mix stirring speeches, heated arguments, and singing and dancing to tell the story of the writing of the Declaration of Independence. If you can catch it, it’s running until February 24. The Pittsburgh Public Theater puts on well produced shows, with quality actors and detailed sets. If you enjoy theater, check out a Public Theater show soon!</span><br />

Here's The Downtown Pittsburgh Love Story Contest Winner!<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Michelle and Pete met against the backdrop of the Three Rivers Regatta and have fallen in love doing so many of the things that we Pittsburghers love! Movies in the Park, visiting Mt. Washington, a Pitt Football game and so much more! We thank them and so many others for sharing their stories of how they fall in love with and in Downtown Pittsburgh! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I met Peter Kaminski for the first time,
face to face, on July fourth. After chatting back and forth for a month, we
were finally scheduled to meet at the annual Pittsburgh Three River’s Regatta. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With the hustle and bustle of the Regatta
attendee’s, I felt it was most practical to meet under the bridge that led to
the Point. I vividly remember him handsomely walking up as I leaned on the side
of the bridge. After a swift hello, we continued on to visit the various
activities that the Regatta has to offer such as the speed boat racing, sand
art, live music and best of all, the Fourth of July fireworks!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: 12.75pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Little did I know at the time, this event
was RIGHT up Pete’s alley (this is where I have the opportunity to brag about
him, even though he would never stand for it!); he is a U.S. Merchant Marine
Academy graduate with a background of competitive, collegiate swimming and
currently works along the Monongahela River as an engineer for a towboat and
barge company, as well as works as an Officer in the Navy Reserve. With
Pete’s knowledge of the rivers, I was able to drill him with questions about
the boats that were racing, the engines aboard the vessels, the barges that
were positioned to set off the fireworks and other questions in regards to the
maritime industry. Although Pittsburgh is Pete’s hometown, and I am from a
suburb of Philadelphia, Pete was competitively swimming for much of his younger
years. I enlightened him to the Pittsburgh knowledge I had picked up from my
college years, and he taught me maritime engineering. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-repeat: initial initial; background: white; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Although I had a couple of
friends “conveniently” enjoying the Regatta in case I needed a get-me-out-of-
here-card, it was an evening of seamless conversation. It was uncanny how
many similarities we both possessed in general interests, religious views, and
more! We both loved music; Pete as a violinist, myself as a pianist and
vocalist. We both loved Long Island and New York City; Pete’s college Alma mater,
the hometown of my parents and extended relatives. Ultimately, we both loved
learning about each other. Between Pete’s background and my favorite holiday of
the year being July Fourth, the Regatta made for an outstanding first date.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The next few dates included
hitting a wide variety of neighborhoods around Pittsburgh; dinner in Station
Square, a view from Mount Washington, summer Cinema in the Park at Highland
Park, a Lawrenceville bar, touring my Alma mater (Hail to Pitt!), a
movie in the South Hills, a Triathlon on the North Shore, and so many more.
What I remember the most from all of those dates is that Pete was the utmost
gentleman. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Upon exclusively dating, we have had the
chance to explore the hidden treasures that Pittsburgh has to offer. It has
been a whirlwind of events: Pitt football games, Penn Brewery’s Oktoberfest,
South Hills swim meets, a drive-in movie theater, watching his dad officiate
high school football in Moon, test driving cars in Monroeville, volunteering at
the Cystic Fibrosis annual Passion for Wine event, surprise date nights, Mrs.
Kaminski’s wonderful home-cooking, enjoying in the nightlife that is South
Side, eating at Church Brew Works, and attending a Beatles Tribute by the PSO.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a young couple, we have worked to find
many things to do that fit both our schedules and budgets. We both work
full-time but also keep busy with other activities. Pete is the head coach of
his former swim club team of 8 to 12-year-old's in the South Hills, and I
attend cake decorating & sign language classes, as well as volunteer
throughout the city. With a young-adult budget, we have taken full advantage of
all that Pittsburgh has to offer! Many of those opportunities include the
free festivals throughout the summer, strolling the Strip District, and
attending as many Cultural Trust shows that our wallets and time will allow!
For the Navy Reserve, Pete will be leaving Pittsburgh for a month to work along
the east coast to fulfill his Annual Training requirement. Until then, we
will try to cram in as many activities and events around Pittsburgh as possible
and continue to do so upon his return!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Although things didn't work out so well for the Pen's that night, they did fortunately work out well for Michael and Alyson.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Our Downtown Pittsburgh Love Story by Michael Joyce</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">There are so many things to love about
Downtown Pittsburgh: the endlessly curving arches of the bridges, the fiery
reflection of a sunny day off of the mirrored glass of PPG Place, and even the
clatter of consistent foot traffic and musical accompaniment that echoes
through Market Square for farmer’s market Thursdays. Falling in love with
the woman of my dreams Downtown, however, became my number one metropolitan
memory of the city and only amplified my love for all other things that are
Downtown.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was a rainy and overcast day in April,
2011. It was not just one of those days when a few drops fall thorough a
sunny sky. Instead, it was one of the dark, grey days coupled with
sporadic and torrential downpours that Pittsburghers are so accustomed
too. That night, the Pittsburgh Penguins would face off against the Tampa
Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
I was finishing my final year of graduate school at Duquesne University and was
lucky enough to “score” two tickets via the Penguins Student Rush ticket
release (as many may recall, my score of the tickets was the only goal of the
night, as the Penguins were shutout in Game 7 and eliminated from the playoffs
that year). As a relentless hockey fan and avid player, excitement was an
understatement for mood that day. I quickly texted my long-term
girlfriend, Alyson, and let her in on the good news. As the reliable
companion that I was, I also volunteered to pick Alyson up a white Penguins
t-shirt to comply with the white-out that was taking place in the arena later
that night. Of course, I could not be seen with a naïve fan that wears
the incorrect garb to a mandatory Penguins white-out, so my altruism was
partially self-benefiting.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">During the middle of the afternoon, my
day became unusually hectic and I broke the bad news to Alyson: I did not have
enough time to secure a white-out t-shirt for her. Expectedly, that news
did not sit well with my better half who, at that time, was working in the
Strip District with ample access to a plethora of Penguins merchandise.
Late in the afternoon, however, the rains and winds increased substantially,
rendering what could have been a refreshing early morning walk before the big
storms converged on the area into a soaking trek through the streets of the
Strip to look for the first white Penguins shirt available.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">Fast forward to 5:15 p.m. - Alyson
arrives at my house in Greenfield, which is a small city neighborhood located
just outside of Downtown. We spoke briefly on the phone during her ride
to my house and I could tell that she was less than pleased with my unintended
alteration to her day. Notwithstanding the unhappiness, the telephone
calls gave me an opportunity to track Alyson’s ETA as she neared the
neighborhood, which was an important part of my master plan. As she
entered the door, she released a deafening huff and was prepared to launch into
her well-reasoned rant, or as she termed is “explanation,” as to why my
inability to procure a white-out shirt for her and/or failure to inform her of
said inability earlier in the day was a major miscalculation on my part.
I preemptively responded: “just give me ten minutes and I promise you won’t be
mad.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">I took Alyson’s hand and led her through
the house, stopping every couple of feet to reminisce about a memorable first
in our relationship over the glow of a single tea candle strategically lit for
each memory: the first date, meeting the parents and starting our long distance
relationship while she attended Penn State, just to name a few. The final
candle was larger than the others and, as I explained, represented all of the
future firsts that I hoped we would have: getting married, having a family,
buying houses and cars and many other future events that were possible.
After my explanation of the final candle I slowly descended to one knee,
reached under the foot of the bed and revealed a small, cherry box. As I
began to open the box I saw Alyson’s eyes well-up with tears and she quickly responded
“yes” to my “will you marry me.” She was so overwhelmed that the ring
never even met her finger until approximately ten minutes after the initial
inquiry, as she required ample time to lie down and compose herself.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">Needless to say, Game 7 that night was a
memorable one. Although the Penguins failed to pull through with a win,
Alyson and I were slightly preoccupied to be overly distraught as to the
outcome. After all, she spent most of the night admiring her new
accessory in the glowing and flattering lights of Consol Energy Center.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">I fell in love with Pittsburgh as a city
so many years ago, as a child growing up in the South Hills. Falling in
love with the girl of my dreams in Pittsburgh, however, only opened my eyes to
how many things there are Downtown and around the city to truly cherish. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">I would also be remiss if I failed to
explain my fatal failure regarding the white-out t-shirt: I was unable to
travel to a store to secure an appropriate t-shirt because I used the afternoon
to travel to Wexford to ask Alyson’s father if I had his blessings. In
the end, following my explanation and the exchange of a diamond engagement ring
in place of a white-out t-shirt, Alyson summarily forgave me and, after our
wedding last September, we have truly lived happily ever after.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">Sometimes, the big game doesn’t exactly
go as planned. In this case, I braved a potential rain-out, was forced to
endure a painful shutout, and almost subject to a strikeout for my previously
unexplained failure to obtain the proper attire, but, in the end, things worked
out for the best.</span></div>

We asked for stories about falling in love...with another person, with a sports team, with a building or even an amazing meal. Today we share the first of the stories that we enjoyed. This story is from Downtown resident Adele Morelli and is all about how she fell in love with the city she calls home. Be sure to visit the blog again tomorrow for another Downtown Pittsburgh Love Story.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 12.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Love at First Sight by Adele Morelli</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I moved into Downtown
Pittsburgh 14 years ago, and it was love at first sight. I owned a home in the North Hills but wanted
to live closer to work. My house sold
way faster than expected, so I started looking for rentals. I found an ad for a loft on First Avenue and
thought, “People live Downtown?” As soon
as I walked through the door – which, by the way, was an elevator that opened
directly into the loft that was the entire floor of a building – I knew I was
home. It hit me immediately – walk to
work, walk to the gym, walk to the theater, walk to everything – no car needed!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I lightened my load by getting
rid of two bedrooms, a game room and a garage full of stuff (including a car),
and made the move Downtown. The first
thing I noticed was all the extra time I had in my day because I wasn’t
commuting to work -- or driving anywhere, for that matter. I thought, “I need a hobby.” So I bought a piano with the money I got for
my car and took lessons at Trombino’s -- which was within walking distance, of course.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The second thing I noticed was
easy access to sporting and cultural events.
There were no barriers. If I
thought, “I want to go see that show tonight,” then I would walk down the
street, buy a ticket and see that show.
If I thought, “It’s a nice day for a Pirates game,” then I would walk
over the bridge, buy a ticket and watch a game.
Sometimes I didn’t even have to buy a ticket -- when people know you
live downtown, they tend to think of you when they have an extra ticket.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The next thing I noticed was
how much more active I’d become because I was walking everywhere. I took it a
step further when I got a bike and started riding to places that were too far
to walk in time. I thought, “I don’t
need my gym membership; being active is built into my day.” So I quit the gym and started taking
advantage of all the wonderful trails that were just a bridge away.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You’re probably thinking,
“Living Downtown isn’t all that; there isn’t even a grocery store.” Yeah, that’s true, but I haven’t starved to
death in 14 years, so that’s not high on my wish list. What is high on my list is having a
neighborhood (and it’s happening!) -- seeing people I know when I walk down the
street and saying hello, having a neighbor friend call at the last minute to
go see a movie at the Harris Theater, and having a waiter who knows my name and
order when I walk in the door.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Downtown has improved so much
over the past 14 years, and my quality of life has improved with it. That’s why love at first sight has grown into
a love affair that will last a lifetime. </span><o:p></o:p></div>
